Founder/President Catherine Poggi above
This site will contain an archive of data from the original Ferry Point Civic Group.
The boxes of paperwork will probably never be completely organized, but we will try our best
to compile this information for others to view.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Catherine served for years on Bronx Community Board 10
She was Chairperson for the Parks Committee as well.
We will periodically scan in info. to the site and offer a History of what went on from the
building of the Bronx/Whitestone Bridge until today.
This once Farmland, then waterfront community, and then Industrial Park....
has gone through a complete change.
Following in Catherines footsteps Dorothea Poggi feels this website is not only validation of her
Mothers time and effort, but also a way to preserve the steps that NYC took for economic Development
of the Bronx that failed us as a residential community.

The hours that were devoted to the Community
did help. But actually how much?
I believe it only slowed down the inevitable.
Encapsulated by Industry, our small neighborhood gasps for clean air to
breath in their backyards and nearby Park.
We try to listen to the birds songs as they are over powered by Pepsi trucks now
at 5am.
The mature rose bud opens it's delicately scented petals to the sun,
and it is greeted by a layer of soot and gaseous fumes.
So are the babies that are raised in communities over developed by the well
meaning Elected Officials that want the Bronx to Grow!
a 6 acre piece of mature Forest was sold for 4.5 million to Pepsi,
What did that do to the air, water, and noise level around us???????
Why weren't we down zoned with Throggs Neck to protect future construction of
residential homes.
These are some of the obvious questions we have.

What this site is for:

Over the years since Catherine started the Civic Group, there were points where
she had no support from the neighbors.
When you have a large community of thousands (example: Throggs Neck Homeowners Association)
if you get 400 members who pay dues, maybe 125 that come to regular meetings each month,
that is a good turn out. Country Club Civic may have a mailing list of 900, maybe a monthly turn out of 45
that's stil a decent group to be able to find a few good souls that will stuff envelopes, make the coffee while you get the projector ready.
With a few vice presidents, you can share the burden of multiple meetings on the same night.
If you  have a retired person or housewife that follows the ongoing projects they can stand in for a 9am meeting and take notes.
BUT when you have 30 houses with the husbands all working and the women working full or part time with 2
or three children, there is very little support for the person who is President of a group.
During the 70's women were expected to have their families as priority above their community.
There were very few women that saw the protection of their neighborhoods as
protecting their financial investment in their homes, and the safety and quality of the area and water around their children.
Catherine was one of them.
When Catherine stood up for a Green Belt of waterfront Parks throughout the Bronx,
some people said she had a Polyanna attitude. Well I liked Pollyannas attitude.
It was that if you do good, good happens.

Think Global by Acting Local

Water brings us all together.....
Let's do what we can to reverse and stop water polution.
